Huntsville School District Case Study

With the update of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, public and private sector entities are under pressure to incorporate the new accessibility standards to their websites.

The Huntsville School District sought our counsel regarding the Section 508 updates. Their websites run on a content management system (CMS) offering many options for conquering the issue.

A solution needed to accomplish the following tasks:

  1. Inform the client about the new standards set by Section 508
  2. Identify out of compliance areas within the Huntsville School District’s websites

The 360Civic team developed a training based webinar program to:

  1. Perform an in-depth audit of the Huntsville School District websites and online propriety space
  2. Identify the areas on their website that needed to be altered
  3. Create custom training guides to educate Huntsville on:
    • Comparison of previous ADA guidelines to new regulations
    • File naming guide
    • PDF guide
    • Social media standards
  4. Teach a training course through a webinar on standards and changes that need to be implemented
  5. Follow up with a monthly site review that detects any compliance issues and helps to make any necessary changes

As a result of the program, webinar training and educational documents:

  1. Huntsville School District staff have been empowered with tools to make and identify Section 508 and ADA appropriate edits
  2. The staff who attended the webinar have the skill set to train other faculty members on ADA
  3. The staff will be informed when creating future web based content development
  4. All sites are monitored monthly for any compliance issues
