It used to be when enough people decided they didn’t like one of their political representatives, they’d work to vote that person out of office in the next election.

But that’s no longer good enough for a populace that seems to get angrier every year. Why wait for an election when you can dox the elected official instead, as part of a campaign of intimidation and harassment?

We could give you an example of this every week. Here’s the latest: In Los Angeles, City Councilman Kevin de León has tried to address a controversial issue. That angered some of his opponents. In retaliation, they released his personal cell phone number.

How did protesters obtain that number? The answer, almost certainly, is the Internet. That’s why the best weapon against these despicable tactics is online privacy protection, from a company that has provided this service for more than ten years.

While a cell phone number becoming public seems more annoying than dangerous, in reality, they could just as easily have released his home address. Or the name of his spouse and children. All of this information is easily available online for unprotected individuals.  Whether you agree with de León’s approach to this issue or not, releasing his private information should be unacceptable. Period.

Our focus as a company has been on protecting judges and police officers, professionals who make life and death decisions as part of their jobs. Politicians and public officials also make decisions that affect the lives and livelihoods of thousands of people, some of whom will not be supportive of those choices. That is why we are expanding our efforts to make this protection available to elected officials and members of their teams.

How Does Online Privacy Protection Work?

We use our proprietary technology to scan the internet every day, and when we find the address or phone number of someone under our protection, we make sure the website removes that content. It’s not a request – we don’t give that site a choice.

Do They Listen?

Usually. When they don’t, they listen to the Attorney General’s office. Or we take them to court. One way or another, that content comes down.
